The format war. It’s over. Done. Break out the blue victory hats and Curaçao, right? Wrong. There won’t be a Blu-ray victory party. Don’t take my word for it? How about Sony Electronics CEO Stan Glasgow’s? “From our perspective, the battle really begins now.” Now that HD DVD is dispatched, the members of Team Blu-ray can start fighting standard-def DVDs, digital downloads, consumer apathy, the Chinese and—of course—each other. This one is a little creepy, even for me. It is the actual jacket that held Brandon Lee’s guts in after he was shot and killed while on the set of The Crow (1994). It is said to be authentic because it still has the blood stains on the lower back right side. “Black leather mid-length coat by the Leather Warehouse, size 38, bought for Lee… Together with a letter of authenticity form Darryl Levine, the film wardrobe supervisor.”
It is up for auction from ‘The Pugliese Pop Culture Collection‘ - “may well be the finest collection focusing on 20th Century pop culture ever privately assembled. Approximately eight hundred and fifty of the most extraordinary objects imaginable from the worlds of motion pictures, popular music, magic, television and politics were gathered over several decades by Anthony Pugliese, a man who might well be described as a true visionary. A small sampling of the Collection’s treasures include Houdini’s straightjacket, the Maltese Falcon statuette, Christopher Reeves’ Superman suit, John Lennon’s Abbey Road suit, Elvis Presley’s personal rifle collection and the gun that Jack Ruby used to kill Lee Harvey Oswald.”

So apparently after 6 megapixels, the more pixels your digital camera has, the worse the image gets. Camera companies know that people cream over the number of megapixels their camera possesses, and so they cram as many MPs they can onto the image sensor. With compact digital cameras the image sensor can only so big because of the cameras overall size, so the MPs get smaller as they cram more onto the sensor. This results in grainy images because there is then more ‘image noise’.
Anyway, don’t even bother reading my crappy explanation, just check out the real thing here.

Boom, head shot. Sony no-scopes HD in the face. Toshiba has announced that it will be giving up its hold on HD and allow Blu Ray to take over the market. Check out this great post about the whole thing here.

Here is a hilarious video of what has been happening with the format wars as of late. Sadly to say, it doesn’t look good for the good guys who also happen to be my team, HD.
